Islamic age calculator

Work out how old you are on the Islamic calendar from a birth date in either calendar, alongside your Gregorian age and the date of your next Hijri birthday.

Date of birth

Recorded in which calendar

Defaults to today. Change it to work out an age on another date.

Calendar reckoning

Tabular variant
Shift the result, in days

If the calendar where you are reads a day ahead of what this gives, set +1. The shift applies to every date the tool produces.

These dates are calculated, not announced

Islamic months begin on the sighting of the new crescent, announced locally. A converted date comes from a fixed arithmetic calendar instead, so it can differ from the observed one by a day in either direction, and countries differ from each other.

Saudi Arabia’s official Umm al-Qura calendar is a third scheme again. It is published as a table rather than derived from a formula, so it is not computed here.

Age

Enter a date of birth and your age on both calendars appears here.

Two calendars, two ages

A Gregorian year is a lap of the sun, about 365 days. A Hijri year is twelve lunar months, about 354. The eleven-day difference is why Ramadan moves earlier through the seasons, and it is why the two calendars disagree about how old you are.

The gap is small at first and then obvious. At ten years old it is usually nothing; by thirty-three it is a full year; by sixty-six it is two. Neither figure is wrong. They are counting different things.

How the age is worked out

Both dates are converted to the same calendar, then the years, months and days between them are counted. Whole months are taken first and the remaining days counted after, so an age is read the way people say it: so many years, so many months, so many days.

Where a birthday cannot exist in a given year, 29 February, or 30 Dhu al-Hijjah outside a leap year. It is clamped to the last day of that month rather than rolling into the next one. That keeps a birthday inside the month it belongs to.

If your birth date is recorded in Hijri

Enter it as it is written rather than converting it yourself. Documents issued where the Islamic calendar is the civil one record the Hijri date as the original, and treating it as the fixed point avoids a double conversion where each step can lose a day.

Why a converted date of birth may not match your papers

The conversion applies a fixed arithmetic calendar. The calendar in local use follows the sighting of the crescent, which is announced and varies by country. A day of disagreement is ordinary and is not a fault in either record. If you know the correct pairing for your own date, the shift control makes the tool agree with it.

What this is not

It is not an authority on anything that turns on age: legal majority, obligations that begin at a certain age, or anything a document has to state. Those follow whichever calendar the relevant authority uses and whatever that authority has on record. This works out a number of years; it does not decide what the number means.

Questions

Why is my Islamic age higher than my normal age?
Because a lunar year is shorter. Twelve lunar months come to about 354 days against the solar year's 365, so roughly eleven days are gained every year. That adds up to a whole extra year about every thirty-three. If you are 33 by the Gregorian calendar you are usually 34 by the Hijri one, and the gap keeps widening.
Which age is the real one?
Both are real; they answer different questions. Your Gregorian age is how many solar years you have lived and is what nearly every legal and medical context means by age. Your Hijri age is how many lunar years have passed, which is the reckoning used where the Islamic calendar is the civil one, and is what matters if you are counting the years by the calendar the religious year runs on.
My documents give a Hijri date of birth. Can I use that?
Yes, switch the input to the Hijri calendar and enter it as written. That is more accurate than converting it yourself first, because it keeps the recorded date as the fixed point. Note that if the original was itself a conversion from a Gregorian date, converting it back may land a day out.
Why might the converted date of birth be a day off?
Because the conversion uses a fixed arithmetic calendar, while the date on a document was set by whatever calendar was in local use at the time, which follows the sighting of the crescent. A day either way is normal. If you know the correct pairing, the shift control lines the tool up with it.
When is my Islamic birthday?
The tool gives the next one: the same day and month of the Hijri calendar, in the next Hijri year it has not yet passed in. Because the lunar year is shorter, it moves about eleven days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year, so it is not a fixed date in the solar year the way a Gregorian birthday is.
What happens if I was born on 30 Dhu al-Hijjah or 29 February?
The anniversary is clamped to the last day of the month in years that are too short to hold it. A 29 February birthday falls on 28 February in common years, and 30 Dhu al-Hijjah falls on the 29th outside a leap year, rather than rolling over into the following month.
