What the results on ToolShelf are good for, and when you should check them against something else.
Last updated 30 September 2026
ToolShelf gives you arithmetic, not advice. The tools are accurate about what they do, and deliberately clear about what they leave to you. This page explains where that line falls.
What a result here actually is
A result is the output of a formula applied to the numbers you typed, using the assumptions listed on that tool’s page. It is only as good as those two things. If an input is wrong, or if an assumption doesn’t fit your circumstances, the answer will be confidently wrong, and a calculator has no way of noticing.
This is why every tool shows its working. The intermediate figures are there so you can check the answer against your own understanding, rather than accept it because a screen produced it.
Not professional advice
Nothing here is financial, investment, tax, accounting, legal, medical or religious advice. Using a tool does not create a professional relationship, and no one at ToolShelf is advising you on your situation.
For anything with real consequences, such as a tax filing, a large financial decision, or a religious obligation you want to discharge correctly, treat the result as a starting point and confirm it with someone qualified who knows your circumstances.
Zakat and religious calculations
The zakat calculator deserves specific mention, because it touches a religious obligation rather than a preference.
It applies a rate and a threshold to the figures you enter. It does not issue rulings, and it does not take a position on questions scholars genuinely differ on. The clearest of those is whether the nisab threshold should be based on gold or on silver, which is presented to you as a choice precisely because it is one. Matters such as the treatment of long-term debt, pensions, or property held as an investment are not decided by the tool, and the page says so where they arise.
It is a calculation aid. It is not a substitute for asking someone qualified, particularly if your circumstances are not straightforward.
Rates, prices and thresholds
Some calculations depend on figures that change, metal prices being the obvious one. ToolShelf asks you for the current figure rather than storing one, specifically so it cannot go quietly out of date. Getting a current, accurate figure is therefore your part of the job, and the accuracy of the result depends on it.
Errors
The tools are tested, including against the awkward cases, but no software is free of defects. If you find a result you believe is wrong, please report it with the figures you used. Corrections are made as quickly as they can be, and no liability is accepted for loss arising from an error, an omission, or the site being unavailable.
