These dates are calculated, not announced

Islamic months begin on the sighting of the new crescent, announced locally. A converted date comes from a fixed arithmetic calendar instead, so it can differ from the observed one by a day in either direction, and countries differ from each other.

Saudi Arabia’s official Umm al-Qura calendar is a third scheme again. It is published as a table rather than derived from a formula, so it is not computed here.

The two Eids

Eid al-Fitr falls on the first of Shawwal and marks the end of the fast of Ramadan. Eid al-Adha falls on the tenth of Dhu al-Hijjah, during the days of Hajj, about two months later. Their positions in the Islamic year are not in dispute; where they land on the Gregorian calendar is what this tool works out.

Why the countdown is in days

Eid begins at Maghrib on the evening before the day it is named for, and Maghrib depends on where you are. The date itself is an estimate that may move by a day. A countdown ticking down to the second would look precise and would be wrong in the last place that matters, so this counts whole days.

What makes the date uncertain

Eid al-Fitr is the first day of the month after Ramadan. Whether it arrives on a given day depends on when Ramadan itself began and whether the month ran 29 days or 30, and the length is not settled until the crescent is looked for on the 29th evening. Two unknowns stack up, which is why announced dates routinely differ by a day between countries and sometimes within one.

Eid al-Adha carries a quirk of its own. Many countries follow the Saudi announcement of Dhu al-Hijjah for this one, so that it coincides with the standing at Arafah, while using their own local sighting the rest of the year. The result can sit a day or two from a converted date.

Planning around it

Use the countdown to find the right week. If you are booking travel or asking for leave, allow a day either side. That is what regular travellers do, and the year they do not is the year the month comes up short.

How long the holiday runs

This tool gives the day Eid falls on, not the length of the holiday. That is set nationally rather than by the calendar: some countries give one day, others three or four, and the days of Tashriq following Eid al-Adha are treated differently again. Any single number here would be wrong for most of the world.

Because a ticking clock would suggest a precision the date does not have. Eid begins at Maghrib on the evening before, the exact moment depends on where you are standing, and the date itself may move by a day. Days are as fine a unit as the underlying figure can honestly support.
