Umrah savings calculator

Work out what to save each month for Umrah, or how long your monthly amount will take, with a warning when the travel date lands in Ramadan or the Hajj period.

What Umrah will cost

A package price, or the total from the Umrah budget calculator

The date is the lever

Umrah differs from Hajj as a savings problem in one way that matters more than all the others: you choose when to go. That makes the travel date the most powerful thing in the plan, because moving it changes what you are saving towards.

Ramadan is the peak, and the last ten nights are the peak of that. A quieter week can cost a fraction of the same trip in the busiest fortnight of the year. So this tool reads your travel date back into the Islamic calendar and tells you what season it falls in, not to talk you out of it, but so the figure makes sense.

Two ways round the same sum

If you have a date, the tool divides what is left over the months until it. If you have an amount you can manage each month, it tells you how long that takes. Most people end up using both: the first to see what the plan asks for, the second when it asks for more than they have.

Months are counted down rather than up. Ten months and twenty days gives ten contributions you can rely on, and counting the part month would quietly understate what is needed.

No return is assumed

What you put aside is what you have. Over the few months to a couple of years an Umrah plan usually runs, any realistic return would be small beside the swing in airfares, and a projected return is a guess wearing the clothes of a calculation.

Where the cost figure comes from

Ideally a quote. Failing that, build a breakdown in the Umrah budget calculator and bring the total across. It will at least be structured around the right things, with the hotel counted per night and the flights per person.

Whatever you start with will be approximate, and that is fine. A rough plan you revisit beats an exact one you never make.

When the number is too big

Three things usually close the gap, in ascending order of how much they help: saving a little more each month, pushing the date back, and moving out of peak season. The last one is frequently worth more than the other two together, which is why the tool tells you which season you have picked.

Questions

How is saving for Umrah different from saving for Hajj?
Mostly in the timescale and the flexibility. Hajj is a fixed week of the year, usually costs several times more, and is often saved for over years. Umrah can be done at almost any time, which means the date is a lever: moving your trip out of peak season changes the cost more than almost any other decision, and that changes what you need to save.
Why does the tool warn me about Ramadan?
Because it is the most expensive time of the year to go, and the last ten nights especially so. Flights and hotels both reflect the demand. Many people want to be there precisely then and accept the cost, which is entirely reasonable. The warning is so the number does not come as a surprise.
What is the warning about the Hajj period?
Umrah is generally not available in the run-up to Hajj and during it. The exact dates are set by the Saudi authorities each year, so the flag is a prompt to check rather than a statement that your date is impossible. The tool works out the months either way.
Does it assume any interest or investment return?
No. What you put aside is what you have. Over the few months to a couple of years an Umrah plan usually runs, any realistic return would be small beside the swing in flight prices, and a projected return is a guess presented as a number.
What figure should I put in for the cost?
A quote, if you have one. If not, build a breakdown with the Umrah budget calculator and bring the total over. A rough figure you revisit is far more useful than no plan at all, so start with something and adjust it when you get real prices.
I cannot manage the monthly amount it gives me. What now?
Switch the tool round: enter what you can actually save each month and see what date that lands on. A trip six months later than you hoped is a plan you can keep. It is also worth pricing a quieter week, for many people that closes the gap faster than saving harder does.
